A sober look at Queensland's defence tech pipeline

There is real capability here. There is also a lot of capability theatre. We tried to separate them.

Defence has become the easiest room in Queensland to raise a round in and one of the hardest markets in which to build a durable company. Both things are true, and the gap between them is where most of the risk sits.

We reviewed 28 companies describing themselves as defence technology businesses. Seven have signed a contract with a prime or a government entity. Median time from incorporation to that first contract was 31 months.

A memorandum of understanding is not revenue, and the market has started to notice.

That number is the whole thesis. A 31-month sales cycle demands a capital structure and a cost base that most seed-stage teams do not have. The companies that survive it almost universally have a commercial revenue line doing something adjacent while they wait.

Our filter, when we look at a new team here, is a simple one: what do you sell in month six that has nothing to do with defence?
