Why a Brisbane team is betting the future of everyday tech fits in your palm

For most of the last decade, Queensland founders were told to stay in software. Hardware was too capital intensive, too slow, and too far from local investors who understood it. That advice is starting to look outdated.

Pocket is one of a handful of local companies making the bet that there is still room for a well-designed physical device in a world of subscription software. The team is based in Brisbane, designs locally, and has spent the last eighteen months proving that a smaller, more focused manufacturing footprint can actually be an advantage.

The obvious risk is scale. Consumer hardware is unforgiving on unit economics and cash flow. The less obvious risk is distribution — getting shelf space or enterprise procurement attention when you are not based in Shenzhen, San Francisco or Shenzhen-by-way-of-Sydney.

What makes the company interesting is its choice of beachhead. Rather than competing on features, Pocket is positioning around a single job: a device that does one thing so well it removes the need for a more complicated alternative. That narrowness is either its moat or its ceiling.

For Queensland's hardware ecosystem, the broader lesson is about infrastructure. The founders we spoke to consistently named two missing pieces: local electronics assembly at prototype scale, and investors comfortable with inventory risk. Solve one of those and the region's hardware pipeline looks very different.
