How a Million Dollar Mistake Created Alloovium
Alloovium is the AI operating system for construction.
By Darcy Porter8 min read

Alloovium is an AI platform for construction companies that helps teams manage project documents, automate admin and catch costly mistakes before they become disputes.
Origin
Zander was working as a site engineer at Bradley Marine and Civil.
The latests project plan was:

But a subcontractor had built part of the project using version 7.
By the time everyone realised, it had already turned into a multi-million dollar dispute.
Zander wanted to build something to ensure this would never happen again. So in July 2025 at the Startmate student fellowship, he pitched an AI platform for construction companies.
The idea was simple: construction companies want to construct. They don't want to deal with a heap of documents and admin that, if there's a mistake on it, can cost millions of dollars.
Startmate
This led him to join Startmate's Launch Club during the spring of 2025 to really validate his idea.
He sent out 600–700 LinkedIn connection requests and literally interviewed anyone in the industry who would listen. He realised this was a major problem.
He quickly created a demo and started pitching it, shortly finding someone at Multiplex who said they'd be really interested if it was built out properly.
He realised this could be something big. So he created Alloovium and brought on Cielo as the CTO, and together they started working on it full time in December.
Then at the beginning of 2026 they joined Startmate's season 26 accelerator. They had no product and no customers, just a good idea.
Y Combinator
In June, after 4 weeks of selling, they had A$49,000 in ARR, were deployed across $400 million of active contracts and had 40 companies in their pipeline. Which led them to apply to YC.
Leading them to join YC during its 2026 summer batch.
The Alloovium team has expanded to five people and are now based in San Francisco focusing on U.S.-based construction companies. Including a new co-founder and CPO Omar Elloumi who was initially founding engineer.
They are now launching their U.S. Innovation Partner Program focusing on America's largest construction firms and general contractors. The idea is that winning one contractor leads to multiple subcontractors also joining Alloovium.
The team is now returning back to Brisbane to continue their story.
Founders
Zander Schweitzer - co-founder and CEO.
Zander is a civil engineering student from UQ. His father was a civil engineer, and he remembers that on his 5th birthday he spent it on the back of a bulldozer in the port of Brisbane. He later drove dump trucks and bulldozers and then worked as a site engineer at Bradley Marine and Civil. He then went through the Startmate Fellowship and Launch Club where he originally came up with the idea for Alloovium.
Cielo Nicolosi - co-founder and CTO.
Cielo is a CS dropout from UQ. He began coding at 8 years old, and at 15 he created a product in 1 day and grew it to a quarter of a million users in 4 months, then sold it. He was the DUX of BBC and represented Australia in football across eight different countries. He worked on Relatide and 8 hours after founding raised a US$60,000 pilot from a 3-hour cold call. Cielo reportedly turned down a $500,000/year job from Google to go all in on startups and Alloovium.
Omar Elloumi - co-founder and CPO
Omar is a computer science and AI graduate from the University of Technology of Compiègne in France. He spent three years as a data scientist at LexisNexis, turning machine-learning research into products for complex legal information. Soon after graduating, Zander and Cielo asked him to join Alloovium as a founding engineer. He left LexisNexis to go all in on the company and has recently become Alloovium’s third co-founder and Chief Product Officer.
Funding
Startmate S26
Startmate's deal is A$120,000 at a A$1.5 million post-money SAFE valuation cap.
Y Combinator S26
YC's deal is US$500,000: US$125,000 for 7% on a post-money SAFE, plus US$375,000 on an uncapped SAFE.
Competition
Procore — Biggest strategic threat as it already owns a major part of construction projects and is adding agents, AI search, contracts, and other workflows. Customers already pay for the service, so if they have a 'good enough' AI they may win.
Trunk Tools — Have the highest overlap, building construction-specific AI for project knowledge, document search, and workflow automation. They are well funded and announced a US$40m Series B in July 2025 and US$70m total funding.
Document Crunch — It has overlap in obligations, contract review, notices, and project-risk workflows. They have focused on depth in one high value area: contracts, risk, and compliance.
How they can win
Workflow > AI search — They need to double down on being a complete workflow for construction companies rather than just a chatbot.
Project intelligence — Their moat is that the more a company uses their platform, the more embedded they are and the better the platform gets.
Trust — As mistakes can cost millions, companies need to be able to trust Alloovium can produce good work.
The Scorecard
Insights
Start with the problem, not the product — Zander began with a problem and reached out to hundreds of people to see if that problem was real, rather than coming up with the idea of making an AI platform and then going from there.
You won't be right the first time, so be fast — Alloovium went from hard-coded MVPs to pilots to a seed incredibly quickly and in under a year. Rather than making it perfect the first time, you need to be quick and execute change.
